Our Featured Horse for March is Comache

Comache is one of only a few ponies amongst the Horses of Halifax. Though some people think a pony is a young horse, a pony is actually determined by their height. Any horse under 14.2 hands high (this is how horses are measured and is approximately 144cm) at the wither is considered a pony regardless of age.

Comache is seven years old, and appears to be black, but on closer inspection is a very dark greyish colour with a dorsal stripe making him a “dun” in equine terms. Though he is young and still a little green, he has fit in beautifully at Lancers since his arrival in 2020. A number of different Lancers have gotten to develop their horse training skills thanks to young horses like Comache joining our herd, and Comache’s training was started by a young Lancer even before he made it here.

Comache is a good friend to the other horses in his turnout group, and loves to have the other horses nearby, especially his pony buddy Linus. Comache is a fast favourite for many kids who get to ride him, and he quickly made his way to being able to teach some of our youngest riders too. He has been successful at a number of horse shows in the province in the low jumpers, and even joined our Musical ride in 2021.

Comache’s show name is “Hogwart’s Express”, as his colouring resembles a steam engine, and he helps transport many youngsters into the magical world we get to be a part of when connecting with horses. See if you can spot Comache when he’s outside playing with his friends.
