Our Featured Volunteer for the Month of February is Jillian Slevin!
It is wonderful volunteers like Jillian who help Lancers build better lives through horses.
Jillian joined Lancers in July 2019 and brings lightness and positivity to our community. Jillian started riding in Ireland as a child and spent most teen weekend at @birchill_stable. She joined our adult program and as soon as she could, began volunteering with various tasks ranging from helping with our free summer pony rides and Lancer Picture Day, to acting as a mock participant during our Equine-Assisted Learning staff training sessions, to putting in the hard work cleaning and painting the barn during August clean up!
Jillian choses to give her time to our community because it's time well spent, the contributions by extension serve the Halifax community, and she gets to learn more about Lancers as an organization. She told us, “I often hear Lancer is a special place, and it is - the barn is full of individuals who support each other without hesitation, where your age, status and background disappear. There is great energy in the barn, everyone is so joyful to just be there. Being new to Nova Scotia I never expected to find a community like Lancers. I can't imagine what the last two years would have been like without this.”
Even in a relatively short time, Lancers has certainly benefited from Jillian and her volunteer efforts. As COVID restrictions will hopefully ease in the future, we look forward to having Jillian continue to share with us her talents, enthusiasm, and genuine care for both horses and humans.
Thank you, Jillian, for all that you bring to the community!
