Featuring our Board of Directors

This Friday, we are featuring Lancers Board of Directors!

One of the numerous aspects of Lancers that people are usually pleasantly surprised to hear is that we are a non-profit and that the horses are owned by the organization. We are the only urban non-profit riding school in Canada and being so greatly shapes the way we operate which is quite different from other riding schools.

Lancers was incorporated as a non-profit in 1954, and has been governed by a board of directors ever since. Our board is made up of up to 13 individuals (including our executive director) who tend to be within our organizations’ membership. These individuals take their role seriously, provide our organization with sound leadership, and share a passion for ensuring that Lancers continues its mission to “build better lives through horses” while making the equestrian sport as accessible in terms of location, ability, and cost.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall direction of Lancers pertaining to its mission, vision and plan. The board ensures the financial well-being of the organization while maintaining accountability and upholding legal and ethical integrity.

In addition to monthly meetings and a yearly retreat, each board member also fulfills responsibilities within our various committees (Programming, Finance, HR, Communications, Building, Fundraising and Nominations). These committees do an immense amount of “behind the scenes” work that many Lancers may not even know.

We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers who pour their hearts into maintaining our high standards of excellence. In the spring of 2018 our board created a strategic plan with an ambitious five year outlook. Incredibly nearly every objective ended up being met within the first 18 months of the plan! This means we get to look forward to setting some new goals for the coming years (pandemic or not!).

We are soon approaching our call for board nominations and we are excited to see who may be interested in joining our team along with our current Directors:
