Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is Scott Hocquard!

“Lancers has helped me appreciate the value to the community. When I watch the children interact, you can see how helpful they are to one another and how happy they are while doing it.”

Scott started volunteering at Lancers in 2018 when his daughter Maya, started riding at Lancers. Scott jumped into helping with hay and shavings deliveries right away and now over the years, he has become more involved. Scott will often help with set up for The Downtown Horse Show, training shows, and Musical Ride. He has helped with pony rides, The Winter Gala and of course Spruce up the Barn days and August Clean up! Most recently Scott has been attending off-property horse shows with Maya, who has trained him very well, and he has been a great help to the whole team!

Scott does not ride himself (wIth the exception of the parent ride over the holidays). Scott was never around horses growing up, but Maya took a strong liking to them at a young age. “They somehow make me very calm and relaxed, I just forget about everything else when I am interacting with them.” Scott loves being around all of the horses but his favourite right now is Fawkes. He enjoys giving his time to Lancers because he loves seeing the smile on Maya's face, “She always has one when she is at Lancers, she is so happy being around the horses and the other kids and me being involved at all is a great experience.”

“Looking out for others in your community has been something that seems to have changed over the years and it is nice to see those qualities being instilled in our children, so thank you for that. This seems to wear off on the parents as well because we all seem to be more than willing to help out each other in any way we can, be it with drives to the stables, helping each other out at horse shows, or just seeing how many parents volunteer their time and are always happy while doing it. I also like all the great life lessons you teach our children while they are there. There are not many activities for children that teach responsibility, patience, hard work, empathy, communication, adaptability, trust, and building relationships. As a parent, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that.”

Scott really gets what we do at Lancers and we’re so appreciative that he chooses to give back to us!
