Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is Amanda Langley
At Lancers, we are always excited to have parents jump into Lancer life as volunteers! Amanda Langley became a Lancer member nearly a year ago when her daughter Elle joined our Ride 10 with previous riding experience. With her professional background, Amanda decided to lend her talent to the Lancer Communications and Public Engagement Committee.
For Amanda, it was important for her to get involved in the Lancer community and support her daughter’s passion. When asked how volunteering at Lancers compares to other volunteer opportunities in her life, Amanda noted that she has volunteered at many different places over the years. However she explained, “Lancers has such a strong sense of community and welcomes each new member to its family with open arms. You feel like you are a part of that family immediately”.
Since becoming a member, Amanda has gathered a greater understanding of Lancers’s past and present and what it brings to the province. She explained, “The barn is an iconic landmark in Halifax. Lancer’s current location on Bell Road was built in 1908 and is designated as a heritage site. It is one of the only riding schools in the world where horses are stabled downtown and hold an active presence in city life! The more you learn about the Lancer history and experience it, the more you appreciate just how special it is!”
All volunteer roles at Lancers are crucial to making our non-profit thrive. Amanda provides valuable time and contribution to our committee which is currently spearheading some exciting projects. But Lancers is also having an impact on her. She explained: “Before coming to Lancers, we had taken lessons at several other barns”. “There are so many things about Lancers that make it unique and extraordinarily special. Here are just a few of the things that stand out for me: It is an iconic landmark in the downtown (people love their “horses of Halifax!”), it is a not-for-profit operation and is run first and foremost out of love, it has a wide-ranging membership from lessons for young children to adult to seniors and offers therapeutic riding for those riders with special needs, partnerships within the community including the Halifax Police (who’s horses live at Lancers!), and a family of staff, board of directors, riders, and volunteers whose love for Lancers goes far beyond the walls of the barn!” Amanda is now very much a part of that family!
We greatly appreciate the experience and enthusiasm Amanda brings to the committee and to Lancers as a whole. We look forward to many more years of having Amanda as a Lancer!
