“Lancers teaches us all courage and patience, perseverance and sportsmanship, empathy and the sheer delight of a great ride! My hope is to be a Lancer and to keep learning and spreading the word about our wonderful Horses of Halifax that bring the greatest joys and friendships.” - Tanya
Our Featured Adult Rider for June is Tanya Holt
Tanya has been a Lancer since 2018 although she started riding 7 years ago. Tanya shared that “horses and riding gave [her] a happy place during a time when [she] was suffering a life altering depression”. She started riding elsewhere and spent her time grooming, shoveling manure, feeding, and riding. It calmed her mind and opened up so many new friendships. Tanya had always known about Lancers and Angie shared her love and passion for the organization.
Tanya’s first experience with Lancers was when she agreed to talk on one of our retirement horses named Jesse. At the time, she owned Giquau who was not an appropriate match for her skill level and so Jesse, who needed to retire from our lesson program went to Tanya, and Giquau joined the Horses of Halifax. Since losing Jesse, eventually Tanya found her own way to Lancers and joined our adult membership. She quickly fell in love with Simba and since his retirement, she’s partial to Bud but of course, her favourite will always be Giquau.
Over the years, Tanya has participated in clinics and Salmon River trail rides, and lots of volunteering including August Clean up, Spruce up the barn day, Pony Rides, office administration and invigilating for rider level tests! She has a strong love of horses and if she has to miss a lesson, always tells us to give the horses a carrot for her!
According to Tanya, “Lancers is an amazing community of like minded people of all ages. It's a privilege to ride and it makes me smile every day that I'm at the barn and witness kindness and devotion from the younger riders towards the horses and their peers.”
