Our featured Junior Rider of the Month is Jess Jakeman!

Jess started riding at Lancers four years ago in the junior beginner course. This was not her first introduction to Lancers as Jess’ older brother, James, and mother, Alison, have been riding at Lancers since 2017 and Jess would often come tag along and hang out at the barn with them. When there was a spot open at Lancers, there was no question if she was going to join or not. Jess has always had a strong passion and love for horses. Before riding at Lancers, Jess got an introduction to riding when her family would go to England in the summers and she would go for pony rides.

If you know Jess, you know she is not afraid of working hard and getting her hands dirty! If you ever ask her if she can help, her answer is always "yes!" Over the past 4 years, Jess has volunteered to help feed night hay and help run canteens. She has also taken part in Lancer Days, training shows, and Salmon River camp. Whenever she has the chance, Jess is eager to help out at off-property horse shows. Always wanting to contribute to Lancers, over the years Jess has run many bake sales and lemonade stands with other Lancer friends to help raise money for the #horsesofhalifax

Jess’s favorite horses are Cunningham and Eddie. She said, “Ham 'cause he's so sweet and fun to ride; Eddie 'cause he challenges me.” Jess and Cunningham are forming a wonderful partnership and friendship in and out of the saddle. They both work hard and learn a lot from each other.

Even at the young age of 11, Jess is already a strong and independent woman who is genuine, has a wonderful character, and is community conscious. We have always enjoyed having Jess as a dedicated Lancer, and look forward to many more years with her in the barn.
