Our featured staff of the month is Emily Rafuse!

Emily’s current role at Lancers is that of an instructor. She has been teaching at Lancers for three years and enjoys helping riders of all ages improve their riding skills, build confidence, and establish strong partnerships with the wonderful horses of Halifax.

Emily has been at Lancers since 2010. During her time as a junior member she worked as a stable hand and as a barn monitor, participated in off property shows, rode in the musical ride and was the president of the junior executive in her final year. I still continues to ride as an adult member at Lancers, alongside her instructor position.

Emily doesn’t have just ONE favourite horse as she loves them all dearly. However, there are two mares who have a special place in Emily’s heart, Rainey and Clementine.

Emily has made lots of special memories during her time at Lancers. When asked about it she says “One of my favourite memories as a junior rider was pretty much the entirety of Salmon River camp. Once a year we take all the Horses of Halifax to CNHP in Truro for two weeks to hold a camp for all the junior members. It is such an incredible experience to sleep under the stars, to go on trail rides with our city horses, and to take a stab at other equestrian disciplines like cross country riding. Now, whenever I wake up early in the summer when the sky is still dark, for a moment I feel like I'm waking up at Salmon River to go feed the horses.

As an instructor my favourite memories are from attending shows with some of the riders that I teach. Though I am not a coach yet, it makes me very proud to see all the hard work the riders put in during their lessons paying off in the show ring.”

Emily brings a great deal of passion to her role as an instructor and is always looking to improve. Her students all say they are lucky to have her as an instructor and we value her contributions to Lancers greatly.
