Our Featured Junior Rider of the Month is Julia Corsten!

Julia is in her 11th and final year at Lancers as a junior rider as she will be graduating high school this year. Julia has always been an active member of the Lancer community and has become a great leader and role model to so many around her.

Julias’ favorite horse at Lancers is Ava Jane who she lovingly refers to as “Poopy Sue” or “Susan”. Julia co-purchased Ava in 2018 and has spent the last 6 years working together and forming a great relationship “She has a sweet and silly attitude with such a great heart, that shows us her love for all things Lancer.”

Julia and Ava have competed successfully in the Jumper and Hunter rings in Nova Scotia. This past summer they went to Quebec and competed at International Bromont where she placed 2nd in the 0.9 m jumpers competing against over 60 horses and riders. Julia would like to continue riding competitively and develop her skills as an equestrian.

While Julia loves the time she spends in the saddle riding at home and horse shows, one of Julia’s favorite programs at Lancer was the Atheltic Immersion Program (a program we had before Covid). The program helped young riders learn to develop as athletes through exercise and nutrition outside of the saddle. Julia was a star pupil of the program and it helped influence her to study nutrition sciences when she goes to university next year. She hopes to one day run a similar program for young athletes. This year Julia is the president of the Junior Executive, she has been working hard to “help get the junior riders more involved in Lancer life, and have a positive impact on the community”.

Some of Julias’ favorite memories at Lancers were growing up here and spending every day at the barn with friends. Julia has lived through lots of ups and downs during her time at Lancers (as is the nature of working with animals) She has treated every moment as a learning experience and has grown from it. “Lancers has shown me what it means to love, respect, and provide the best care for a horse. It is where I made so many friends, it helped me learn to lead and teach others to give back to a place that has given me so much”
