Our featured Volunteer of the Month is Conrad Fernandez!
Conrad has been a supporter of Lancers' since 2009 when his daughter Caroline joined Lancers as well as his wife Suzanne and their horse Jakey! Conrad has been volunteering since the beginning of his time at Lancers, often cooking breakfast sandwiches for our canteens and the occasional call to help repair broken stall boards. Since he retired this past June he has been spending much of his retirement at Lancers doing repairs, making some jumps, painting poles, fixing water outlets and other odd jobs around the barn.
Conrad enjoys giving his time to Lancers he says, “It is most meaningful to me as it supports the ability of my wife and daughter to do the things they really love to do. They live and breathe the barn, as do many of their friends. I also know there are many important programs that teach young folks responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Helping in a small way to make that happen gives me great satisfaction.”
Jakey is of course Conrad's favourite horse, however, Merlin is a close second! However, Conrad has many fond memories of Lancers; one of his favourites is “watching Caroline compete on Jakey - locally in the province and at the regional finals for the CET in Quebec a few years back. It is clearly a team effort - from the groom's person to the trailer to the coach and all her support in the stands. I also love watching Suzanne strive for her goals in horsemanship. Their smiles while riding make my day!”
When Conrad is not at the barn he enjoys playing hockey with friends he has had for over 30 years. He and Suzanne also enjoy playing golf with friends in the summer as much as they can!
We are so grateful to have Conrad as a part of our community, and for all of the work he has put into helping the stables and supporting our riders!
