Our Featured Adult Rider of the Month is Lauren Willett
Lauren has been riding for 11 years, starting at Lancers in 2008 in the summer camps. “As with most riders, I was a horse crazy kid, so I used to go to the barn to pet the horses when they were out grazing by the museum. While I was there someone told my parents about the summer camps. I loved every minute of my first camp there and have been riding at Lancers ever since.” Lauren started in our junior membership and now rides in one of our adult rides. Along the way she was on the Junior Executive, rode in the Musical Ride, worked as a stablehand and barn monitor and became a certified instructor. Lauren still occasionally teaches lessons, and take part in weekly “J” rides while she completes her University Degree.
Lauren’s favourite Lancer horse is Oliver for his sweet nature. She also has fond memories of Bucky, a now retired Lancer horse. Her favourite memory from her earlier days of riding is from a trip to Coveside Stables. “A group of riders got to take some Lancer horses and use Coveside’s beautiful facility and explore the trails. The lessons were a lot of fun because we could play around with Coveside’s jumper courses. I remember being challenged and learning a lot during Angie’s lessons there.”
Lancers has been a great addition to Lauren’s life, “Lancer’s has allowed me to grow as both a rider and a person, with the help of different mentors. The barn has given me unique opportunities to pursue my passions. It’s also where I’ve made some of my closest friends.” In the future she hopes she’ll be able to spend more time at the barn again once she finishes her Bachelor of Commerce degree at Dalhousie and starts work at a local accounting firm next fall.
