Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is David Jakeman

David is the only one in their household who doesn’t ride but he’s certainly still a fantastic Lancer!

David’s answers to our questions were so great, that we’re including them raw in all their glory!

“I don’t ride. I’ve been on a horse twice for trail rides (decades ago) and found the experience uninspiring. Aged about five or six, I had the misfortune of patting a horse on its thigh when it was eating and got kicked by the horse as a consequence. My parents were not horse-aware.

I started being involved with the Lancers when Alison and James started riding there. Until then, I didn’t realize how much my wife Alison embraces things horsey.

I regularly help with shavings deliveries, and sizing helmets to children for pony rides at Lancer Open Houses. I’ve also learned how to wheelbarrow concrete and fix fence posts. One day I should learn to drive the tractor - activities that typically don’t require interaction with horses!

Volunteering at the Lancers typically gives me a feeling of satisfaction and achievement because many people say thank you and are obviously grateful for the assistance. It also gives me a chance to see my children (and Alison) doing something they are passionate about. The unbridled smile on James’ face after the musical ride or a horse show always tickles me, and whenever I see James or Jess sweeping with a broom at Lancers, it gives me hope for their bedrooms, one day.

Who is my favorite horse? Often we have a family game of trying to name horses in the Lancer barn. No surprise I come last. However, I do recognize Merlin, he has a very distinctive gait and colour (is he the piebald one?).

I do like Lancer get-togethers. The welcome back BBQ, the open house, the Winter Awards Gala potluck. It gives an opportunity to chat with friends and listen to stories. I recognize that Lancers is a very special organization and alongside learning to ride, it really advances children’s growth, confidence and development. I feel very fortunate that both of my children have been involved at the Lancers. Our garden is also mighty grateful for the essentially limitless quantities of manure to help tomatoes and cucumbers thrive.

I used to play soccer and still enjoy swimming, skiing and riding my bike.”

David is an important part of the Lancer community and not just because he’s a Jakeman! We’re always very happy to see him around and appreciate his varied contributions (even if they don’t include him touching a horse)!
