Our Featured Volunteer of the month Kim McDonah
Kim Started volunteering with the Therapeutic Riding Program in the Spring of 2023. Kim has taken part in every role she can during Therapeutic Riding such as assisting riders with their equipment, helping the Coordinator in the arena and of course grooming, tacking and leading. After retiring, Kim was looking for a new volunteer role. She had participated in one of our Summer workshops where she learned about the Therapeutic Riding Program “it’s the best of both worlds because I not only get to help people in an important program but I also get to work with the horses.”
This year Kim has enjoyed being able to help teach new volunteers. It is very clear how much Kim cares about the work she does and cares for the people and horses around her. If she had to pick a favourite horse it would be Cunningham because of his golden retriever-like personality. “Lancer horses are so special and we are so lucky to have a horse barn in the middle of our beautiful city. The time we give to the Program as volunteers means the riders have an opportunity that otherwise may not be available to them.”
When not at the barn, Kim enjoys playing tennis and swimming, she has organized a knitting club, and also loves to bake and is often referred to as the cupcake lady. “I absolutely love being at Lancers and I can see how special the Therapeutic Riding Program is to so many people. I love seeing the smiles on the rider’s faces when they’re in the arena and seeing their parent's reaction as they watch the lesson, it is beautiful. I’m also amazed at the connections the riders have with their horses. The Therapeutic Riding Program team is so supportive and encouraging with the riders but I can also feel the team’s appreciation for the volunteers and, of course, their love and respect for the horses. I feel very proud to be part of the Program and I can’t wait to get to the barn for my shifts!! Honestly, as soon as I walk through the front door and see those sweet horse faces greeting me as I make my way to the Halter room, I feel a sense of contentment and I know I’m part of something very special. We are grateful that Kim has chosen to give her time to Lancers and the Therapeutic Riding program.
