Q. When and why did you start at the Lancers?
A: “I’ve always been an animal lover since childhood. When I was little, my dad took me for a pony ride at Hatfield Farm. I was very scared being on the horse, but enjoyed petting and feeding it very much. I loved being around horses so, my dad kept bringing me to watch the majestic creatures in the outdoor arena at Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers. When I saw the older girls riding and working together with the horses, I instantly wanted to become a rider as well. Watching the jumping competitions and musical ride just made me want to do it right away. I had to wait until I was eight years old. But ever since, I have deeply enjoyed and cherished this unique sport.
Q: Who is your favourite horse? Why?
A: “I don’t have a favourite horse. I like them all because they all are unique in their way. Each one of them teaches me something different and makes me a better rider.”
Q: What impact has Lancers and horses had on your life?
A: “Halifax Lancers and the horses aren’t something you will forget. It teaches you life skills in a meaningful and impactful way. One of the skills I have learned is confidence. I have learnt this by making decisions quickly and in the moment on the horse and sticking with it. This has not only made me a more confident rider, but it has also made me more confident of myself and my decisions. Once you become a rider, you need to have certain skills to work with your horse. A few of the main skills I feel like I have gained are hard work, determination and assertiveness. These skills are important to be able to stay on task, communicate effectively, never give up and persevere through any obstacle that comes my way. At Lancers, you continue to learn every day. As the saying goes “Once a Lancer, Always a Lancer”.
Q: What do you enjoy most about Lancers?
A: "Halifax Lancers is a special place to be. Within the barn walls, there is an unbreakable magical bond between the riders and horses. Whenever an obstacle comes in our way, we, Lancers find a way to persevere and overcome it together. To me, the best part about Lancers is being with my fellow co-riders and peers. I enjoy working, riding and laughing together. Before COVID-19, you could come and go whenever you wanted. There was always someone there, and you’d never feel alone. You could spend time with any horse you wanted and stay there for as long as you’d like. On some days, usually before shows, we would have music playing while we got our horses ready for a show. There was always an older rider who was happy to lend a hand and teach you a new skill like braiding a horse’s mane. Once in a while, we would have a dance party in the arena. Whenever I am at Lancers, I feel safe and at home. I enjoy doing chores with my ride because it makes me feel like I have contributed to the barn in an effective and meaningful way.
We have thoroughly enjoyed watching Manya grow as a rider, horseperson, and an individual and look forward to more years with her. Thank you, Manya, for being a fantastic role model to Lancers of all ages!
