Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is Genevieve Zimmerman!

“Lancers is very special, I have loved watching it grow over the years into the inclusive community-orientated place it is today. Anything that I can do to support its growth and longevity is important to me.” Genevieve grew up riding and working at different barns in Nova Scotia, she was an avid Pony Club Member and during this time she owned two horses, Candee and Mackie. Genevieve rode at Lancers from 1995 - 1996, and then joined again as an adult rider from 2016 - 2019, and then had to stop riding due to a knee injury. This coincided with her daughter, Emily joining the beginner course so now she says, she is “ living vicariously through her!”

Since Genevieves’ return to Lancers in 2016, we have been thrilled to see her dive into more volunteering opportunities as time passes. She always takes part in our “Spruce up the Barn Day” in the spring, August clean up, and annual fundraisers. She is always there to lend a hand and support the team at horse shows, and during Musical Ride, and most recently she has joined the Board of Directors! “Giving back to the Lancer community is very special to me as I know firsthand what a magical experience it is to have horses in your life as both an adult and a child.”

Genevieve's favourite memory at Lancers was her first ride at Lancers in 2016, after not being on a horse in 20 years “I rode Peter one late summer evening, the feeling of cantering outside was the absolute best in the world (I was very sore the next day!)”. Most recently her favourite memory was watching her daughter at her first off-property horse show she said, “ [it was a] very proud parent moment but also I was so proud to be with this group of kids who were all supporting each other, cheering each other on, a true team”.

“It is important to me to support an organization that is important to my daughter, especially one that is teaching her so many wonderful skills and values.” We are pleased that Genevieve has reconnected with the Lancer community and for bringing us Emily who we have enjoyed watching grow as a horse person and individual and who will no doubt take on many youth leadership opportunities at Lancers.
