Our Featured Volunteer of the Month is Wendy Tarrel

Wendy is one of our many active parent members at Lancers. She began volunteering with us when her daughter, Jenna, began riding at Lancers several years ago. Although not a rider herself Wendy is frequently seen around the barn visiting the horses and helping out in whatever way she can. “Although I think riding would be fun, a gentle walk would be enough for me. I do prefer my feet to be firmly planted on the ground as I am not the most coordinated.  I love to be around the barn though whether it be to groom a horse, clean tack, hold a horse, help out, or simply visit.”

Wendy contributes a lot to Lancers, taking part in many of the activities it offers and helping out at most of our events, like the wine and cheese and downtown horse show. She also enjoys lending a hand to our shavings and hay deliveries and barn clean up days but her favourite volunteer opportunity is the Lancer Open House. “I enjoy being a tour guide and sharing these amazing horses with the public.  I love the joy it brings to the community!”

“Lancers is my favourite place to volunteer.  I enjoy working with the horses, staff, and other volunteers. There is something very special about the relationship with a horse.  A simple pat can turn a bad day into a good one. Volunteering at Lancers is also different because of the bonds and ongoing relationships that are formed. I have made new friends, and I enjoy the social and supportive nature of Lancers.  Everyone at Lancers truly cares about each other. Lancers is a family. I believe in the values and aspirations of the organization.  I have seen first-hand the dedication of the Lancers team to its riders and the values that they instils in the riders. It is an honour to support Lancers as they fulfil their goals.”

Wendy credits Lancers for making her feel welcome and at home in our community and with instilling great horsemanship skills in all our riders, including her daughter.  “Lancers offers fantastic programming for anyone interested in horses.  There is something for everyone. I enjoy watching the riders take on the opportunities and challenges that they are presented with as well as watching them grow with the support of the Lancer community. One of my favourite memories was the day I entered the barn and saw Jenna in a new light.  I have seen Jenna grow as a rider and person while at Lancers. She has become an engaged and dedicated horse person rather than just a rider.  It was an amazing moment to witness!  I am so thankful to everyone at Lancers who has helped Jenna to become a true equestrian!”
