Our Featured Adult Rider of the Month is Taryn McGillis!

Taryn grew up riding and working horses in Onatrio. After some time out of the saddle and a long wait on our waitlist, Taryn started riding at Lancers in the fall of 2023. “I have always loved horses and always dreamed of being able to ride and work with horses. The companionship and connection that you can develop with horses is amazing. Being at the barn and around horses has always been my happy place to go to help me unwind and relax.” After starting her career and having two kids, Taryn knew she had to go back to having horses in her life “Riding gave me an outlet to exercise and find myself again outside of being a mom. When a spot opened up last year at Lancers, I knew I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to join such a wonderful community of people and be able to be part of the amazing programs Lancers provides.”

One of Taryn’s favourite memories at Lancers was bringing her daughter to the Musical Ride Performance, she watched her face light up watching the horses and then being so thrilled to get a pony ride on Bud. “Having a place in the city that provides opportunities for young kids to interact with and experience the joy of horses is incredible.” Taryn hopes her kids will continue to love horses and be able to watch them learn and grow as equestrians. Hoping they develop important life skills that come with working around horses and volunteering within the Lancer community.

Taryn is grateful to be able to get to know all of the Horses Of Halifax she says they are all amazing but Fawkes holds a special place in her heart because he is the sweetest boy and a Joy to work with. He really won her over by sticking his tongue out when he wants treats!

Taryn is looking forward to further developing her skills as a rider and would like to work towards achieving her rider levels and then instructor qualification.

We are excited to have Taryn at Lancers riding again, and appreciate all the volunteer efforts she has given already. Her kids have also jumped in to help for some of our events!
