Our Featured Horse for the Month of May is Cory!
Meet Cory! Cory joined the Horses of Halifax in December 2020, and is the biggest horse in the barn, standing 16.3 1/2 hands high. Cory is the latest of many Lancer horses who have made their way here from Crosby Stables, where he was bred in Falmouth, NS. Cory came to us with the name Jack, but we renamed him Cory as we already have another Jack at Lancers. (You may remember we also had to do this with Eddie who we featured back in February who also came with the name Jack!) Cory turns ten years old this summer, and although he is very big and powerful, is an absolute gentleman.
Cory is ridden by our more advanced riders who can work with his very big stride and help him learn along the way as he was still pretty green when he arrived at Lancers. We are very fortunate to have a horse like Cory, who can teach riders the value of and how to work with a great deal of strength and power without compromising their safety, as he is truly a gentle soul. Cory isn’t bothered by the busy city landscape, and loves getting attention and being groomed.
In the short time that Cory has been with us he has participated in training shows, off-property horse shows, been a stellar mount on the trails at our Salmon River camp, and impressively already cemented his place in the lead of our Musical Ride. Cory takes everything in stride, and though sometimes his long legs seem to get in his own way, he is always happy to try for his rider.
For reasons that are unclear to most, many of the riders at Lancers affectionately refer to Cory as “Sidewalk”. In the show ring he is known as “Ocasio”. If you visit Cory in the paddock, he will likely come say hello regardless of which name you use
