Our featured volunteer of the month is Marney Steeves!
Marney's daughter, Sydney started riding at Lancers in 2022. “When Sydney joined, I could immediately see how much she loved being a Lancer. It’s such a supportive group and I just really enjoy being around that positive energy at the barn. It’s also a great way to get to know more of the parents and riders. This is such a well-run and supportive community that I'm thrilled that Sydney can be part of such a great team.” Marney was quick to jump into any volunteer opportunities she could and is eager to learn more about the equestrian sport. Although she does not ride now, she is on the waitlist and hopes to ride at Lancers one day.
Over the last year and a half, Marney has been a huge help during August clean up, the Winter Awards Gala, Shavings and hay deliveries, invigilating rider level written tests, and helping out at lancer training shows with set up/tear down and 50/50 ticket sales. Marney has also become very proficient with taking photos and videos for Sydney at lessons and shows. “I love being involved at Lancers! The kindness of the kids as well as other parents makes it fun and rewarding to help out. I also really enjoy being around all the horses and learning about all their interesting personalities!” Marney’s favorite horses are Merlin and Oliver because of their sweet and gentle disposition.
“I have enjoyed going to the off-property shows at Restless Pines and Coveside this past summer. I always try and sit with people who know what’s going on and ask a lot of questions. I’m learning so much! It’s so great to watch how much fun the riders are all having with each other between showing as well as supporting each other during the ups and downs of the competition. I also love watching the riders grow and develop their leadership skills at competitions as well as day-to-day at the barn. It’s so fun to see them grow from being a new Lancer to watching them help around the barn and support the younger riders. These are skills they will use for their entire lives.”
Marney actively participates in Sydneys' riding and time at Lancers. We appreciate her willingness to learn more about this sport and grow alongside Sydney. They are both supportive of the Lancer community and exemplify Lancer values.
