Our Featured Horse of the Month is Jakey

IMG_3885.jpg

Jakey is a ten-year-old maritime-bred Dutch warmblood cross. He has been at Lancers for nearly six years and is owned by Suzanne Ramsey and Caroline Fernandez and is the only privately owned horse boarded at Lancers. Since our programs have grown so much in recent years, we no longer accommodate privately owned horses and instead fill the stables with horses owned by Lancers as a non-profit. Luckily we were able to strike an agreement so that Jakey could stay. While Caroline is away at university, Jakey is used in our lesson program. We are very fortunate to have such a high calibre horse for some of our more experienced riders to learn on.

Jakey is an exceptional athlete and has been showing in the 1.20 meter jumpers in Nova Scotia and Quebec. This year he also qualified for both the CET regional finals and JC Anderson Memorial Medal Finals where he finished third place in Eastern Canada with Caroline Fernandez. We hope he’ll be jumping in even higher divisions next year. Though he is very athletic and talented, he is also very accident prone and requires some heavy duty bubble wrapping. This has also helped to teach many Lancers a great deal about horse care. He is very loveable and will spend long periods of time cuddling with his head in somebody’s arms. He is one of the first friendly faces you see when you come through the barn and is always a favourite with visitors and tourists. He is full of personality with many quirks including being quite spooky and yet at the same time, he remains a very safe and reliable mount. He has been known to compete in the low hunters with an adult amateur on the same day that he competes in the 1.20 jumpers and is happy and willing in both rings. Jakey even tried his hand leading our musical ride in 2016 our last year to perform at the Maritime Fall Fair. While not an easy horse to ride, we appreciate his ability to give riders confidence and take them to new levels in this sport and we hope that he can stay at Lancers for many years to come!
